Doug West says...

Lee, thanks for your comment about my work and the expanse it evokes. Of course for us all, so much of New Mexico is like Nature\'s cathedral... where we can melt into solitary moments with quiet reverence.

Lee Bronock says...

Mr. West;
It\'s been decades since I was \"Out West\" and I felt that clear air, endless sky feeling when I found a seriagraph of your \"Here and Now\" sitting on the shelf above the dresses in a local thrift shop. I got it and hung it on the wall in my library/den. Whoever expired and left it has generously given its\' light and space to me to enjoy. It brings back a memory of being all of six in 1962 and climbing up a scree to the top of a hill off of the road through the Petrified Forest. Endless space! I feel the thrill today. Thank you for being an artist and expressing the feel of the place.
Lee

Doug West says...

Susan, sorry for the delay in responding. \"Born on the Wing\" is a large format serigraph edition I hand printed early in my career. It remains one of my favorites for its simplicity and bold graphic composition. Although it does not reference a specific place, it certainly was inspired by my early experiences after moving to New Mexico... viewing its dramatic skies, the pinion trees defining the contours of land forms, and the river that is its lifeblood... the Rio Grande.

As a micaceous clay artist myself, Yellowbird\'s work is breathtaking. The pieces are very difficult to achieve both in the fabrication and the firing, to say nothing about the beauty of the form which so beautifully fits the marriage between the imminent and the transcendent. Well done Blue Rain for acquiring this master potter.

I can still remember him carving at times, and putting a lot of detail in his carvings. We all miss him!!

Beautiful work Tammy

Glenn Bordner says...

You take me back to my childhood days of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers. The only difference being that your creations are light years beyond what we saw in 1955. With your wonderful objects we become kids again traveling to a distant star. As a docent at MONA I had a lot of fun pointing out your pieces in a recent exhibit there.

paula childers says...

Dewayne - it is wonderful to hear, however brief, your story about watching your father carve. Like you, I cannot ever get over the incredible detail.

A great serendipitous find while goofing off on Face book. I don\'t usually go in for southwest art but really like Tammy\'s work. Thank you both, Tammy and LeRoy for this beautiful Blog and the gorgeous illustrations of your artists\' work. All of it is extraordinary.

As I\'ve confessed before, within my own FB page, if I lived near your gallery in SF I would be in BIG trouble. Another of your artist\'s does painting on canvas. You have a protrait of a beautiful woman in a white dress carrying an oriental basket. In my dreams I own that........if only I could.........

Having these photographs brings this beauty right into my home, I view it whenever I need inspiration. Thank you for bringing this to us, no matter where we live on earth we can view this, isn\'t that extraordinary? Continued success and stay safe. Leah

Gail C. says...

David\'s work is outstanding. It is very clear that he is paying attention to the world around him - - - how people affect their surroundings and how they in turn are affected by what is whirling around them. Clever, fun, great social commentary. I \"wowed\" and smiled as I viewed David\'s works of art.

Doug West says...

Mary, Thanks so much for sharing your story about \"Time & Space\". Of course artists enjoy knowing when their work has found a special home because it speaks to the collector in some indefinable, personal way.

Your comment about seeing a special moment and relating to my art is gratifying. Such times are often the inspiration for me to begin a new creation. I highly value observing the unfolding beauty of our world... our experiences in nature we all prize while transiting time. It is my special joy communicating these visions through my work. Thanks again for sharing with me.

All the best,
Doug

Mary McMullin says...

My husband and I first fell in love with your work when we visited your gallery in Socorro, NM in 2001. My husband was particularly enamored by your serigraph \"Time and Space.\" Being a young, newly married couple, we couldn\'t afford it, but my husband never forgot that image. Fast forward 10 years: For our anniversary, I decided to see if I could find Time and Space even though it had been sold out for some time. Through an online search, I had the amazing good fortune of finding an unframed serigraph at a gallery in Albuquerque. I contacted the gallery as was told it had some minor damage, but that it was corrected/repaired by you personally. I said I\'d drive up from Socorro the next day. I looked at the serigraph, but for the life of me, I couldn\'t see where the damage and/or repair was. Long story short, I bought it, had it professionally framed by Todd in Socorro, and gave it to my husband. He was beside himself, and to this day, it is one of our most prized possessions, and we never tire of looking at it. I just thought I\'d share this story with you so you would understand just how much your work and vision are appreciated. P.S. I\'m living in AZ now, but there have been and are so many days when I look at the sky and the clouds and the light and say to myself, \"That\'s a Doug West painting waiting to happen.\"

Gary Simpson says...

I cannot put into words my admiration. Your work is so moving. I saw your exhibit at the Tacoma glass museum a few years ago. I am generally not a fan of glass art. But, my mother-in-law is and loves Chihuly. So, we went to the museum when she visited and they had to drag me away from your exhibit. When I think of it now it brings tears to my eyes. I wanted to set up a bed and live there amongst your work. Thank you for making me appreciate glass work like I never thought I would. I look forward to seeing it again one day. I have never dreamed of owning something so beautiful but now I hope one day I can. My best wishes to you. May you be blessed with continued inspiration. You are a gift.

Surrealism had a great effect on me because then I realized that the imagery in my mind wasn't insanity. Surrealism to me is reality.

God bless you Mr. Franco!

Doug West says...

MM, Many thanks. Well yes... you did discover my work at the 1978 Armory show. It was my first public showing. At the time I was working a full time job but was compelled to be creative by producing art at home in the evening. Just after the Armory show I started showing in a Santa Fe gallery, and shortly after quit the full time job to focus on my art. That was over 30 years ago. I continue to love interpreting the beauty I see here in NM, and out there in the world at large.

Lydia Guajaca Saiz says...

I remember Jim from high school. He was talented then adn is talented now. His paintings are so beautiful and takes you back to a time that our parents went through. Simply beautiful!

Marilynn PG says...

Had the pleasure of meeting Hyrum Joe while in Santa Fe around the 17th of August 2010 while he was completing a wonderful trading post painting. His work is delightfully historic, telling a wonderful story with great artistic skill. He noted that E Foutz had helped his father at the Shiprock Trading Post as he began his creation of his wonderful, prize winning works. A young man with great skill & soul.

Diane and Jay Carpenter says...

Tony,

We are so happy to know you and look forward to having your painting in our living room. Pancake breakfast again anytime you can make it !

MM says...

So glad to see your paintints at Blue Rain. I almost feel I "discovered" you, since I first saw one of your paintings/prints at an Armory show in Santa Fe in the 1970s, and commented, "This artist is going to make it!" I have two of your works and never tire of that fantastic sky.

gary raygor says...

Your work is awe inspiring, I have the good fortune to own one of your large paintings of Taos Pueblo, which I have visited many times, the lovely pastels with the dark underpainting gives the depth of being there on my old adobe wall. David Bradley's work offers viewers a visually powerful, brilliantly detailed insight to the contemporary struggle of Native American peoples. The paintings are simply beautiful, the colors vibrant and light-filled, the images at once caustic, yet gentle, and caring. Bradley's intellect and palette are important to the art world and the social evolution of American life. Keep on truckin' Mr. B!

Rey De Lupos says...

I am a native Santa Fean who has always had an intense appreciation for the beauty of New Mexico. It was in my early twenties that I first came into contact with Doug West's work.

When I saw his images I was blown away -- the vision and beauty of his art resonated with my own visceral experiences of this landscape we call the Land of Enchantment. Since that time my love for his work has grown in ever increasing levels of appreciation.

Thank you Doug for your inspiration and the beauty of your work.

Most sincerely,
Rey De Lupos

Chris in Chicago says...

The wine bottle was an amazing depiction of the experience of addiction - the illusion of sharing what becomes a private hell. I really liked the shots of the body of Jesus with the artist's face superimposed and very ethereal, and then the very down to earth close ups of the artist's hands working with his materials - it was very satisfying.

Rick & Jerry in Taos says...

Thanks for sharing these comments and insights on your creations. Beautiful body of work in this show. Best wishes ... Rick and Jerry

Even more happy for you that you have fulfilled your dreams, have the same calm, thoughtful demeaner as you did when you were in your 20s.

Jan Oliver says...

Beautiful work. Beautiful video!

Elaine Szeto says...

Thank you for sharing your art pieces -- and that's what they are; not just jewelry, but also art. I really like combination of color and form (be it fluid, solid, solemn, mysterious, or lively), as complemented by each of their names. They all paint vivid pictures in my imagination -- brings me back to the wonderfully simple but strikingly organic movement in some Sesame Street's animation segments that I still remember to this day.

Mark Grape says...

Lavrio's/Larry's work is beyond measure. It is a blending of spirit, fire and stone, integrated with the power of gold. He is one of a kind, in many ways. A true master indeed...

Thank you, Doug, for sharing your creative process. I see your "Willows" in a different way now. The video images by Blue Rain Gallery stand alone as art in my book.

Doug West says...

Thanks Paulette for your comment. This was a first for me, and a lot of fun. Of course by virtue of the size of this canvas, it remains in progress still. But the beauty of the videos produced by Blue Rain Gallery is they offer a glimpse of artist's studios and their individual creative process... a view collectors rarely see.

Paulette Steensen Jacobs says...

Doug, I was smiling the whole time! So fascinating to see how you make such beautiful art! Thank you,.....

janice lewis says...

I love your paintings. They remind me a little of Thomas Hart Benton.

Doug West says...

Steve, Thanks for your positive comments. I love the colors that result from New Mexico's clear skies. The lIght... it truly is why so many artists are inspired by this place.

I strive to bring a heightened sense of realism by adding detail to my paintings, while still retaining the unique signature that brushes produce applying oil to canvas.

Best Regards,

Awesome! Thank you, Blue Rain and Tony Abeyta, for sharing. It is especially interesting to see how any artist begins and ends a piece.

Susan Nicholson says...

Dear Tony,

I've only "met" you through your videos, which I find myself searching for after seeing the "Underworldness" one at the Heard Museum. I'm deeply touched by your art in all its forms, but particularly the black and white. I dabble in many art forms (mostly weaving), but your work has actually inspired me to paint for the first time in my life. It's wonderful that you can talk with your audiences while creating such incredible stuff without missing a beat. Thank you for all your beautiful, inspiring work, and please come back to SOFA Chicago next year so I can come to see you!

Vivian Casey says...

How interesting and fun to see how these amazing pots are fired! I was thinking that it would be a great video to show in a high school art class. I'm assuming that the fire is put out with the sand to allow the pot to cool slowly so that it doesn't crack.
Great video! Thanks for sharing it.

R. Gorden says...

This is truly great style and flavoring.

Cristina Blanco from Brazil says...

Great work

says...

As this was my first viewing of shelley muzylowski allen's art, I loved what for me was a surprise ending. I have seen glass artists at work before, and so was very impressed by the physicality and scale of the process. What really struck me was the simultaneous sponteneity (now, that's what I saw; perhaps every possible dribble was under control.) and deliberateness of the process. In my mind I "saw" the final result ... Alchemy! Magic! Not what was in my mind at all! Ah Ha! Beautiful. Thank you for the show!
E. Marie Baker

sally allen says...

wow! what a great film. I had never seen you doing your own work start to finish. You seemed so focused and in control.Maybe it's the feminine touch but differant from watching Rik or Bill. Sarah Taylor - S.E.T. Studios says...

I remember driving cross country and made sure to make it through Taos on our way to CA. I am so grateful that we ran into Blue Rain Gallery and saw your amazing work. I am a fine artist in FL, but I hope so some day to own a piece of yours. Your work has made a place in my mind always and you will have yet another admirer of your amazing creations.

I wanted you know that I always keep a quote of yours printed out on the wall in my studio - "We are all journeying. Our journeys encompass our past, our upbringing, our anguishes and joys..." My work will always be about my journey and your inspiration will be a part of the path I am on.

Thank you for sharing your visions with this world!

Mike Rudahl says...

Wonderful work. Technical expertise combined with a sense of whimsy are a winning combination in my book.

Catherine Naylor says...

When I viewed the video clips of my neighbor Deborah Rael-Buckley on this site, I was struck by all that her art form demands of her. The physicality of her whole body as she moves around her creation, bending over it, molding it, her arms and hands building, layering, and smoothing it; a disciplined technical skill required to control what could be a run-away process; a mental and spiritual concentration exacted to “gather the images” from memory and even from what has been forgotten; and a keen presence to be at one with what is becoming in her studio: all signs of a master ceramicist.

When I first stepped into Deborah’s studio a few years ago, I stood before a ceramic sculpture in tribute to her father-in-law who had died from cancer, as my father recently had. Her sculpture held memories and symbols so powerfully present and real in all of their dimensions, that all I could manage to do, was to turn around and walk back home accompanied by my father, remembering him again, and how much I had loved him and still do.

Gracias Deborah!

This moves me. It really connects with me.

Kathleen E. Hendrick says...

I am amazed by the depth of meaning within the pieces that Deborah Rael-Buckley creates. She creates these sculptures that are life sized without any internal support system. They have so many hiddent meanings that relate to her background, New Mexico culture and life in general. They are incredibly rich and beautiful. The colors and shapes make them unique on their own but there is this deeper message that lies beneath the surface that waits to be interpreted. I happen to be an owner and and am always surprised at the reaction generated when people encounter Deborah's art for the first time. Once people get beyond the sheer beauty of the sculpture they ask numerous questions about the symbolism incorporated within the piece. She is able to mesh earthy beauty with commentary on life.

In 1994, a young 27 year old female was awarded "The Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts" to include "The Allan Houser Memorial Award". I would think that she was the "youngest" to receive such a high honor. This artist that I am speaking of is, Cheryl Joe, an absolutely excellent sculptor! I wish you all the best for also winning such a high honor. Congratulations!

These pieces are outstanding. I hope in the future to buy at least one.

Very beautiful work. It has some of the charactristics of a self-taught artist but the style is very personal because of the subject matter, but the landscapes are very sophisticated. Wonderful execution.

We found this art and video very interesting and the music accompanied the process well. We'd like to see more of this and Tony A. is inspiring to watch. The art is symmetrical and the video brings that out in Tony's organic methods while being relaxing to watch. It would be great to hear Abeyta speak about his art too. Miss the gallery in Taos, you don't know till it's gone...

I remember your amazing studio in Taos, where I interviewed you for Tempo. You were working more on monotypes then, so it's nice to see your paintings also. Cheryl Joe says...

Your paintings are wonderful to see! Thank goodness you include the other beings that share Mother Earth with us. That is so cool!

Michael Krum says...

Your paintings are very beautiful and must have a personal meaning behind them all. It must take alot of thought, im guessing you probebly stare at a blank wall at church, and the picture flows threw your mind. Thats what helps me paint.

Carol Pelton-Wagner says...

You're still an amazing painter -- as I remember you years ago when I lived in Taos. Just thought about you today out of the blue. Carol

Cyndy Copeland says...

We have enjoyed our Mardi Gras bronze piece so much and would love to have one of these beautiful glass pieces. The nation is lucky to have such a great artist creating such a treasure. Thank you.

Earl Stubbs says...

I discovered Tammy's work on a recent trip to Sante Fe. The precision is remarkable. How she can transform her mind's eye into the material's available is the talent of a true genius, but first and foremost, it must be in her mind.

Art is in the minds of the artist and the beholder. She is doing her part.

Dear Tammy, Leroy and the Staff at Blue Rain Gallery,

Now that the dust has settled, we would like to recognize what a great honor it was to host the patina demonstration at your gallery during Indian Market, 2006. It was a pleasure to get to know some of the collectors and share with them our enthusiasm in achieving the highest level of quality we are capable of attaining in the art market today.

The Staff at Bronzesmith

Congratulations Blue Rain Gallery and all of the artists on a successful Indian market! The work was fantastic!

Wendell Harris says...

I do wish that galleries and museums would stop assuming that everyone who buys art is a "collector." Many occasional buyers of art (my wife and I included) buy what we see thatt we like and can afford at the time. To buy is not necessarily to "collect."

Bobbi says...

Thanks for the "4 points" on buying. Now...how about elaborating a bit on each. That would be great. For instance, What is the significance of the number of pieces the artist produces each year? What does one look for to see if a piece is well made? What do you mean by "pricing integrity"?

Thanks for the good blog.

BB
