Sukey Hughes was born in 1945 and grew up in the Chicago area. She studied are at the Junior School of the Art Institue of Chicago and Pamona College, and in 1985 recieved a self-created degreee in Book Arts from Antioch University. In 1969 Ms. Hughes moved to Japan and began an apprenticeship in papermaking, which eventually resulted in her book, Washi: The World of Japanese Paper - considereed a classic in the field. Since 1980 Ms. Hughes has written, taught and lectured extensively on the subject of Japanese paper making. In 1986 she began her present work in which she manipulates handmade paper to resemble leather, creating ancient-looking gaments, shields and pouches. This has been a synthesis of two strong lifelong interests: Japanese papermaking and art of traditional peoples, specifically Nativer American art. Ms. Hughes currently resides in northern New Mexico.
