Tammy Garcia: Redefining Native Traditions
Drawing on the ancient storytelling tradition of her Santa Clara Pueblo forebears, Tammy Garcia honors her ancestral roots while crafting new visual narratives that attest to her culture's continuing viability in an ever-changing world. She adopts symbols and motifs from a variety of Native peoples past and present - Mimbres, Anasazi, Northwest Coast, Hopi - and updates her storylines with objects and observations from the present. Garcia's new work for the Market includes nine coil-built clay pots, five new bronze sculptures, and her first new line of jewelry in several years. "The pots are a mix of classical and contemporary, with a few designs I've never done before," she says. "I pair elegant shapes with symbols like moths, beetles, quails, eagles, and dancers."
