Saint Jeanne de la Nouvelle-Orleans

Oil and 24k gold leaf on aluminum panel, Image: 24"h x 30"w, framed: 29.75"h x 35.75"w, Item No. 18509,

This is my version of Saint Joan of Arc, a New Orleans creole enslaved 19 year old who speaks french and is fighting for the freedom of all enslaved people in the southern states and territories. The notation of her age in the lower right corner is inspired by the paintings of Hans Holbein. The date in the upper left corner is Juneteenth, or Emancipation Day, commemorating the ending of slavery (June 19, 1865). I am inspired in some of my ‘historical’ portraits to place black women in positions of authority and power.
