Tres Graces de Los Muertos

Acrylic and mixed media on panel, 48”h x 42”w, Item No. 24330,

In Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, 1926, prostitutes slept with US Marines in order to learn where the soldiers had hidden 40 rifles & 7,000 cartridges. Defying these occupiers, as well as the cruel dictator, Somoza, that they had installed; these heroic women led Indigenous revolutionary Augusto C Sandino & his men to their first stockpile of weapons with which to liberate their people.

The fearless Whores of Puerto Cabezas inspired Tres Graces de Los Muertos, however, the piece is also more broadly a celebration of women-across continents & centuries—taking ownership of their sexuality, sensuality, & agency. The piece speaks to a feminine grace, strength, beauty, & solidarity, that— despite all attempts by the wealthy & powerful Epstein Class of every generation— can never be extinguished.

The post-consumer packaging & discarded ephemera layered into the piece include: pages from a 1902 Sears catalogue offering revolvers; Playboy playing cards; a ticket to the Museo Rufino Tamayo; a Dr Pepper box; November 1st & 2nd pages from a Penang, Malaysia calendar; Victoria Secret panties tags; Mexican Loteria cards; a CBDevotion body oil box; cigar sleeves from Nicaragua; a truck gun rack box; a torn poster from Greece; business cards given to me by David Santiago, La Emi, & Shepard Fairey; a Godshot Berlin espresso bar; Danish cookie doilies; a Buenos Aires Muy Thai class for women schedule; Double Time Dance Studio punch cards; Honey Mamas chocolate wrappers; a Tarot Death card.
