Cheii Meets the King of the Monsters

Acrylic on canvas, 24"h x 30"w, Item No. 21249,

“Cheii” translates to grandfather in Navajo, but also in the Navajo tradition the horned toad is considered “our grandfather” and to be very respected.

When a Navajo is out on the land and finds a horned toad, they are supposed to put it over their heart and pray to & give thanks to cheii.  This painting symbolizes a deity of the Navajo creation stories meeting a contemporary pop culture icon, and they are both dragons or reptiles.  The Godzilla toy is also reference to one of the toys I had as a kid.
