September 9th, 2025

Step into the digital gallery as we take you on a virtual tour of Billy Schenck: Layers of the Western Myth, our upcoming exhibition at Blue Rain Gallery from September 12–23, 2025. Known as the "Father of Western Pop Art," Schenck reimagines the American West with bold color fields, cinematic drama, and a touch of irony. In this exhibit, his works invite us to reflect on the myths, landscapes, and labor that have defined the West in the American imagination.

As you begin the tour, you’re greeted by the monumental painting Enchanted Mesa II. The canvas looms like a sandstone monument, its flat planes and sharp contrasts turning natural rock formations into an icon of permanence. Schenck’s treatment transforms the landscape itself into a central character, asking us to consider the West as more than just a backdrop but as a force with its own voice.

Moving deeper into the exhibit, All Day Long comes into view. In this piece, Schenck captures the grit and endurance of cowboy life. Bold blocks of color frame a solitary rider at work beneath the unrelenting sun. It is both a celebration of perseverance and a meditation on the human relationship with land—reminding us of the labor that underpins the myth of the West.

At the heart of the exhibition is Short Cut, a striking depiction of a lone figure caught in a moment of decision, poised between safety and danger. The sharp edges, cinematic angles, and luminous colors give the work an almost film-still quality, underscoring how much of our idea of the West is shaped by both Hollywood and history. Schenck’s brush invites us to question what’s real and what’s myth.

Though nothing compares to standing before these works in person, our virtual tour allows you to experience the power of Schenck’s art from wherever you are. Click through each gallery room, zoom in on the bold brushwork, and immerse yourself in the layered stories of the West.

Billy Schenck's Guadalupe Street Feature runs September 12–23, 2025 at Blue Rain Gallery. We invite you to join us for the opening reception on Friday, September 12, from 4–6pm and explore how Schenck redefines the legacy of the American frontier through his vibrant and thought-provoking art.
